Texas A&M football rallied from a fourth quarter deficit to beat South Carolina at home and improve to 4-1. Was it enough to earn Sumlin more time in charge?

Aggies will be the first to tell you that they haven’t been over the moon with the decisions of Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. It’s hard to defend someone that allows a 34-point lead to evaporate. However, had one more bounce turned in the Aggies’ favor in their season opener, we’re talking about a 5-0 Texas A&M football team.

If. It’s a word used by the hopeful and the optimistic. But it also raises a fair question. What if? If the Aggies had hung on to the lead against UCLA at the Rose Bowl Sumlin would still be coaching for his job, but perhaps he might even have received some credit for the strides his team has taken over the month of September.

Texas A&M trailed an FCS team at halftime a few weeks ago, but they won. Winning has been the Achilles’ heal for Sumlin’s teams down the stretch. He might not win come November this year, but he deserves the chance. Rather than pack it in and finish his time in College Station quietly he willed his team to four straight victories.

Texas A&M will probably lose to Alabama next weekend. That’s not too bold to project. They won’t be favored on the road against Florida either. People have been speculating that Sumlin might not make it through the Week 8 bye without winning either of those games. But that was before Sumlin strung together these four wins.

It hasn’t been pretty, but it’s working. Kevin Sumlin has relied on Kellen Mond, a freshman quarterback, coaching him up and setting him loose. For better or worse. It’s worked so far, and at the very least, Sumlin has earned the right to see this season through to its conclusion.
