In most weeks, Tennessee’s historic loss to Georgia would be the worst loss of the week. But another SEC school spared the Volunteers the indignity, as LSU tumbled at home on Saturday night to an unexpected foe. What seemed like a paycheck game instead turned into a nightmare in Death Valley as Ed Orgeron joined Jones on the hot seat.

Troy is one of the favorites in the Sun Belt this season, but they came to Baton Rouge on a 19-game losing streak against the SEC. LSU had notched two of those wins during the streak of futility. By all rights, a team like the Bayou Bengals should never lose to a team like the Trojans given the disparity in talent and recruiting and money between the programs.

Then the game began, and Orgeron’s squad looked immediately like the weaker opponent. Nick Brossette fumbled away the ball on the very first snap of the game. Troy turned the gift into a touchdown on the ensuing drive. More importantly for the Group of Five hopefuls, they continued to play stout defense against an ineffective LSU offense. The Trojans were up 10-0 at halftime, and then scored on the opening drive of the second half to go up by three scores.

LSU finally got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter, and the Tigers still had a chance at pulling off the comeback at the end. But Troy snagged an interception on LSU’s last drive and then killed the final seconds. While the 24-21 final wasn’t the biggest margin of defeat, it had the biggest impact on the college football world. The Tigers, in the end, earned the dubious distinction of suffering the worst of the worst losses of Week 5.
