3. This was not the last we’ve see of alternative uniforms in Happy Valley

For the first time in the program’s 130-year college football tenure, Penn State debuted alternative uniforms in their Week 5 game against the Indiana Hoosiers.

While seemingly every other team in the nation has adopted unique, often brightly-colored, uniforms to celebrate various occasions throughout their respective football program, the Nittany Lions and their legions of fans fought tooth and nail against the idea of their team dawning anything other than the school’s traditional black shoes, and varsity blues.

At least until current head coach James Franklin arrived on campus in 2014.

After amassing a 24-15 record in his three year tenure as the head coach of the SEC’s Vanderbilt Commodores, Franklin not only brought his winning pedigree to Happy Valley, but also some of the Southeastern Conference’s flair.

The team began marching into the stadium in a looser, more energetic fashion, and a new, youth geared musical soundtrack began being blasted throughout Beaver Stadium on game days.

And on Sept. 30, the team donned a throwback look to honor the program’s Generations of Greatness.

This may have been the most brilliant way of spinning a such a sweeping change to some of the team’s more conservative fans who take pride in the team’s strict adoration to the program’s traditions, as it was a way to honor the greats of the past while still taking an important step forward.

While no other alternative uniforms have been scheduled for the remainder of the 2017 season, the near universal acclaim the team received on Saturday has all but guaranteed that more alternative uniforms will make appearances in Happy Valley in the future.
