3. Josh Adams doubles his touchdown total

If there is any knock on Adams it would be his lack of touchdowns on the season. However, this criticism only carries weight on a statistical basis as Adams has had few goal-line carries to work with. Not because he is untrustworthy near the end zone, but because Kelly has the luxury of using either Wimbush, Dexter Williams, or Tony Jones Jr. when Adams is out of breath.

However, long rushes such as those used by Adams to put the Irish in scoring position may be few and far between as they taken on stronger defenses in the last two weeks of the month. With the potential of easy runs being at a premium, Kelly may decide to mix Williams and Jones into the offense outside of the red zone. This should give Adams the opportunities needed to secure goal-line reps.

While this offense by no means uses a platoon backfield, Adams has only scored four of the team’s 20 rushing touchdowns. Eight of those have been scored by Wimbush, who teams like USC and N.C. State will begin to hone in on in the run game, likely leading to even more goal-line carries from Adams. Williams, Jones, and Deon McIntosh should also cede carries in light of stronger competition.

Adams’ four touchdowns on the season are a statistical anomaly considering the amount of volume he’s received up to this point. The junior’s touchdown totals will benefit greatly from an anticipated decline in rushing scores from Wimbush and his fellow backs. Given Adams’ abilities, doubling his touchdowns may not even be the most impressive thing we see out of him this month.
