Boise State Football: 3 takeaways from runaway victory over BYU
By Zach Bigalke
A tight game in the first quarter turned into a Boise State football blowout by halftime. Here are three takeaways from the Broncos’ road win over BYU.
The rivalry between BYU and Boise State is a 21st-century phenomenon, as the two teams first played in 2003. Since then, the Broncos and Cougars had met just seven times before Friday night’s encounter in Provo. Even then, it has become a heated affair between two mid-major powerhouses. Boise State won five of the previous seven meetings, and Bryan Harsin’s team hoped to make it six out of eight on their road trip.
For the first time since 1970, BYU has lost five games in a row as the Broncos ran away with a 24-7 victory in late-night action ahead on Friday night. It was a relatively clean game between the Mountain West hopeful and the former Mountain West school, as BYU and Boise State combined for just four penalties all game.
While it was clean, though, it was still sloppy at times. The two teams also combined for three turnovers over the course of the night, which kept either team from truly pulling off a blowout. This most recent loss probably knocked BYU from bowl eligibility. What does it mean for Boise State, though? Keep reading for our three takeaways from the big Broncos win in Provo to kick off Week 6 action on Friday night.
