Winner: Michigan State Spartans (unranked to No. 21)

The Michigan State Spartans stepped up in a big way, defeating the Michigan Wolverines on the road 14-10 in a defensive battle. The Spartans defense played big in shutting down the Michigan offense. They forced five turnovers in the game, three of them interceptions from Wolverines’ quarterback John O’Korn.

The Spartans did enough in the first half to hold on to their lead. They led 14-3 at halftime before the Wolverines attempted a comeback. They were able to get close, but a desperation Hail Mary play with time running out left the Spartans with a 14-10 victory.

It was Michigan State’s ninth win in the last 11 meetings between the teams. In a game dampened by rainy weather, the Spartans played their best as turnovers and quarterback play told the story for them.

Quarterback Brian Lewerke finished with 94 passing yards, 61 rushing yards, a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown to lead the Spartans offense. He continues to emerge for a team looking to make noise in the Big Ten conference at 2-0.

They’ve got the Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road this week.
