At the midway point of the season, only four unbeaten teams remain among Group of Five schools. Here is how the top mid-majors stack up heading into Week 7.

Unlike during the BCS era, a perfect season isn’t required for a mid-major team to land a major bowl berth. The only requirement for Group of Five teams hoping to land the automatic New Year’s Six bowl bid for mid-majors is a conference championship.

But the ultimate determination of which champion lands that spot comes down to the subjective deliberations of the College Football Playoff selection committee. As such, Group of Five hopefuls have an incentive to prevent losses and pile up as many statement wins as possible.

Many schools have racked up victories over Power Five schools, including most of the favorites on this weekly list. But only four undefeated teams remain among the Group of Five as we enter Week 7 play, and so those statement wins become even more significant in the calculus of determining the mid-major pecking order.

The four frontrunners are pretty obvious after the first weekend of October. Behind them, though, a group of flawed contenders is trying to mask their blemishes as much as possible. Which smaller schools hold the best hope of overcoming early losses to contend for a New Year’s Six berth this year? Read on to see the current hierarchy in the Group of Five Power Rankings for Week 7.
