Nebraska Football: 5 Overreactions from Nebraska’s loss to Wisconsin
By Shawn Ekwall
Nebraska football was exposed by a Wisconsin team that continues to be the bullies of the Big Ten West. What did we learn from the Huskers’ defeat?
Wisconsin scored the game’s final 21 points in a 38-17 win over Nebraska football in Lincoln. Jonathan Taylor gouged the Blackshirts’ defense for 249 yards rushing and two touchdowns as Wisconsin improved to 17-3 against fellow Big Ten West teams since 2014.
The Badgers clearly put themselves in the driver’s seat to book their second consecutive trip to the league title game in Indianapolis on Dec. 2. The Cornhuskers, meanwhile find themselves sitting a pedestrian 3-3 on the year, with Ohio State coming to Lincoln this Saturday. What does Mike Riley‘s team need to do to right the ship?
Nebraska had its chances against the Badgers. After an Aaron Williams pick-six, tied the game at 17 in the third quarter, Wisconsin rattled off the game’s final 21 points. Taylor and the Badgers’ ground game was too much for Nebraska to handle as they ran it on 28 of 30 plays on their three touchdown drives.
Nebraska has several questions to answer moving forward, including how to shore up its run defense. Bob Diaco’s 3-4 scheme struggled to fill gaps and slow down Taylor and his fellow Wisconsin running backs.
Offensively, the Huskers ran only 19 plays in the second half, 11 passes and eight rushes. Turnovers continued to be an issue, and until these things can be corrected, expect Nebraska to continue to struggle offensively.
Looking back, here are my five overreactions from Nebraska’s loss to the Badgers.
