Nebraska Football: 5 Overreactions from Nebraska’s loss to Wisconsin
By Shawn Ekwall
5. Nebraska continues to commit costly turnovers
Things were looking good on the Huskers’ opening drive, until Tanner Lee‘s swing pass to I-back Devine Ozigbo on 3rd-and-2 from the Badgers’ 17-yard line. Lee put a bit too much zip on the pass, and it bounced off Ozigbo and into the hands of Wisconsin’s Chris Orr, who raced 78-yards for the game’s first score.
According to the Lincoln Journal Star’s game notes, Lee said the Huskers practiced that exact play maybe 15 times this week.
“I don’t know that in a practice or a game that we’ve incompleted that ball, let alone thrown a pick-six on it off a head,” Mike Riley told the media following the game.
The play was eerily similar to the Huskers’ opening drive three weeks ago against Northern Illinois. Lee’s pass to the wide side of the field was picked off by the Huskies’ Shawun Lurry and returned 87-yards for a score. Nebraska cannot continue to put itself behind the 8-ball with those types of turnovers.
Nebraska also turned the ball over in the fourth quarter after receiver Stanley Morgan fumbled following a 15-yard catch. The Huskers lost the turnover battle 2-1, and cannot expect to beat good teams if that trend continues.
