53. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Florida State. player. 2. S. Derwin James

Florida State’s season hasn’t gone quite as planned. The Seminoles are just 1-3 on the year after losing Deondre Francois in the season opener. It’s crazy how much losing a quarterback can affect a team’s overall outlook, especially since the Seminoles’ defense is one of the best in the country.

That defense is led by star safety Derwin James who, surprisingly, came into the season as a Heisman candidate. He missed most of the 2016 season with an injury and came back ready to dominate on 2017 as a redshirt sophomore.

Through three games played, he has accounted for 18 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks and two passes defended. He looks the part of this year’s top-rated safety in the draft and he has the feel of a once-in-a-generation talent in the defensive backfield.

There really isn’t a comparison for him, but he’s an athletic, hard-hitting safety who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs in at 211 pounds. He had 91 tackles as a true freshman along with 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. The Browns picked Jabrill Peppers last year, but he won’t solve the defense’s issues by himself.
