There’s still some hope for West Virginia football to have a solid campaign in 2017 even after a tough 31-24 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs.

West Virginia football had a chance to establish itself among the very best in the Big 12 by beating the TCU Horned Frogs in Week 6. Even though the Mountaineers gave it all they had, it was not enough to defeat a very talented TCU football team at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, TX.

This was a very close game, as anticipated, and it took until late in the fourth quarter for the Frogs to put the Mountaineers away. One thing that was uncovered in this matchup is that both head coaches, West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen and TCU’s Gary Patterson, are two of the most underrated coaches in the Big 12.

TCU showed why they’ll be such a tough out for any opponent in the Big 12. The re-emergence of KaVontae Turpin is also a very scary thing for every other team in the conference. Turpin has shown during his college career that he’s one of the most elusive players out there.

The versatility from the TCU offense from a dual threat quarterback in Kenny Hill and from a backfield featuring running backs like Darius Anderson and Kyle Hicks is tough for opposing defenses to be ready for. Yet, West Virginia actually did a pretty good job containing TCU’s ground game as they were held to 170 rushing yards as a team.

Patterson’s defense showed up in a big way against a great offense once again. West Virginia had not scored less than 56 points in any of the previous three games. Even though those games were against sub par competition, that’s still a good number. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Grier said that TCU’s defense “took WVU by surprise”.

TCU is going to be tough for any Big 12 opponent to beat this year, especially in the Big 12 Championship Game in December.

Now, let’s take a look at five overreactions from West Virginia’s loss to the TCU Horned Frogs in Week 6.
