Louisville Football: Positional report card for first half of 2017
By Jesse Smith
Running back is a tough position to grade because the leading rusher is quarterback Lamar Jackson with 510 yards on 91 carries and seven touchdowns. He has the most yards, carries and touchdowns than anybody in the backfield. So, how I grade this position will be without Jackson and I’ll just look at the true running backs.
Senior Malik Williams has been the main running back for the Cardinals. He has been a threat in the rushing and passing game which is a valuable asset. Williams has rushed for 274 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries with a 7.0 yards per carry average. He also has 13 receptions for 129 yards. Pretty solid numbers for a guy that gets minimal touches. The starter was hurt during their loss against NC State on Thursday and they currently have no timetable for his return.
Senior Reggie Bonnafon is second on the depth chart and currently will be the main running back because of the injury to Williams. Bonnafon has rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns on 4.2 yards per carry. He also has 13 catches for 82 yards this season. Bonnafon, like Williams, is adequate in the running and passing game.
