LSU Football: Les Miles to be honored at Tiger Stadium vs. Auburn
Former LSU football coach Les Miles will be honored this weekend in a celebration of the Tigers’ 2007 national title.
LSU is honoring its title-winning squad on the 10-year anniversary of the Tigers’ national title run. That means that more than 70 players will take the field, as well as former LSU head coach Les Miles. The university has scheduled a halftime reunion of the storied team.
The 2007 championship for the Tigers was a historic one — it was the first time that a two-loss team went to a national title game. They were also the first team to win two BCS championships. The Tigers finished the season 12-2, after beating out Tennessee for the SEC title. They then faced Ohio State for the national title at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, winning that game 38-24.
Miles’ returning to Tiger stadium has some weird aspects. The school is still under obligation to Miles for his buyout, to the tune of a cool $8 million. His replacement, Ed Orgeron, was Miles’ defensive line coach, so there is that bit of nationally-televised discomfort as the two coaches face off for the first time in a year. LSU is also playing 11th-ranked Auburn, who beat LSU last year and resulted in Miles’ unceremonial firing mid-season.
Miles is handling the entire situation with his usual aplomb. In a statement to WAFB, Miles claimed, “It might be awkward, but not for me.” Miles is still a staunch supporter of the Tigers’ program.
