5. Kevin Sumlin will out-coach Jim McElwain

For all those out there, especially in Aggie-land, who want Kevin Sumlin gone, remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Sumlin owns a 48-23 record since coming over to Texas A&M in 2012 as the hottest coach in the country. That’s 25 games above .500 in what many consider to be the toughest conference in college football since that time.

The Alabama native previously worked with A&M as an assistant in the 2001 and 2002 seasons, so he knew exactly what he was getting into when he came over from Houston.

If you look at the progression of his coaching career here, it is easy to point out the negative.

The Aggies started with a bang, going 11-2 and winning the Cotton Bowl. They have failed to reach that level since, posting nine wins in 2013 and eight each season since.

But it hasn’t been an easy road for Sumlin. Injuries have devastated his offense, departures have kept him from having his full stable of players and just bad luck has also crept in.

This, though, is a coach that went 35-17 with Houston, including a 12-1 season six years ago. His four bowl wins are also a credit to what he can do.
