A long road to competing in the SEC West down the stretch for Texas A&M football starts with the Florida Gators on Oct. 14.

Texas A&M football has a real chance to be competitive at the top of the SEC West this year. A close loss to the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide actually proved a lot in terms of what this squad can do. The defense has slowly gotten better week by week and that should only continue.

In Week 7, the Aggies face the Florida Gators, a team that just lost to the LSU Tigers because of missed extra point. It’s he second cross-conference matchup of the season for Texas A&M. The Aggies already defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks a few weeks ago, 24-17. That same South Carolina team just beat the Arkansas Razorbacks by three possessions.

True freshman quarterback Kellen Mond has improved week by week after getting thrown into the fire to start the year. When he completed only three passes against the UCLA Bruins, things did not look good for the Aggies behind center. Yet, Mond has emerged as one of the best freshmen quarterbacks in the nation.

Florida has been an up and down team this season behind a fellow freshman starting quarterback in Feleipe Franks. The Gators have two losses, one to LSU and another to the Michigan Wolverines. Florida’s offense is once again having huge issues under head coach Jim McElwain. Star receiver Antonio Callaway has not been in the lineup to help out either.

This could be an easy one for the Texas A&M defense. Considering how stagnant the Florida offense looked last week, it’s confusing that they’re favored over the Aggies. Texas A&M has already proved that it can take care of business against the SEC East.

If the Aggies come away with the win, it’ll be their fifth of the season, and third in the SEC. Texas A&M was left for dead after the embarrassing collapse in Week 1 against UCLA. However, they could end up being a real player in the SEC West with a big chance against the Gators this week.
