Michigan State football eked out a close win over Minnesota in Week 7, thanks to the legs of junior running back LJ Scott.

It wasn’t pretty. Heck, it wasn’t as easy as Michigan State football would have hoped, especially after mounting a 30-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans pulled off the win. The defense, which had been good all year, had its worst quarter of the season in the final 15 minutes.

The Spartans gave up three fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Demry Croft to Tyler Johnson, making things interesting late. Fortunately, the legs of LJ Scott more than made up for the defense’s late faults.

In fact, the junior running back had been waiting for his breakout game all season and finally got it against the Golden Gophers. He broke out for his career-best rushing total of 194 yards and two touchdowns on just 25 carries. He looked like the Scott of old, weaving in and out of defenders for a huge game and potentially a confidence-booster.

On a day when it was cold and rainy (again), the Spartans were able to feed the hot hand and the offensive line had its best performance on the year. This might be the turnaround the junior needed.

On a positive note for Mark Dantonio and Brian Lewerke, who struggled through the air, the Spartans are 5-1, surpassing their win total from 2016 by two victories and inching one win closer to bowl eligibility. No one saw this start coming for the young Spartans, but Dantonio has done an incredible job.
