As if the news couldn’t get any worse for Washington football and head coach Chris Petersen coming off a loss to Arizona State, it has, as the Huskies lost two starters for the rest of the season.

Peterson announced Monday that starting left tackle and potential first round NFL draft pick Trey Adams and cornerback Jordan Miller suffered injuries that will require surgery and keep them sidelined through the remainder of the year.

“Both those guys — it’s hard,” Petersen said. “But I will say we’ve got some tough, resilient kids. I mean, I think I was in the very shower at the very end — Jordan Miller and I were the last two. And I’m just looking at him shaking my head. He’s got a cast on his leg and he said, ‘I’m going to get up to 200 pounds! I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. Now I’m just going to put a bunch of weight on and I’ll be ready.’

Adams, who has been tasked with protecting quarterback Jake Browning and helping open holes for running back Myles Gaskin, suffered a torn ACL in his right leg during the loss to the Sun Devils Saturday night.

The injury for Adams will likely impact his decision to return to school or enter the draft.

A potential All-American following a standout sophomore season, the junior will be replaced by senior Andrew Kirkland in the starting lineup when Washington returns to action on Oct. 26 at home vs. UCLA.

Miller will require surgery on a broken ankle that occurred in the same game. Miller had been tasked with picking up the secondary slack after the Huskies lost fellow starting cornerback Bryon Murphy earlier this year. Murphy is slated to return yet to the field.

Following the news of injuries to both Adams and Miller, the official Arizona State football Twitter account offered up a message for a “healthy and quick recovery.” The expression “to add insult to injury” certainly has a bit of an extra string to the Huskies this week.
