Colorado State Football: 3 takeaways from victory over New Mexico
By Jacob Wilson
Colorado State football came away with their sixth win of the season against New Mexico behind strong efforts from Nick Stevens and a hungry backfield.
The Rams came away with one of their more exciting victories of the season against the Lobos, kicking off the second half of their season with a 27-24 victory. Colorado State, now at 6-2 on the season, will be officially eligible for bowl game contention.
The offense performed well despite a few scares, and quarterback Nick Stevens left no doubt that he was the best quarterback on the field. The offensive unit was very efficient, converting on most of their opportunities while remaining perfect in the turnover battle.
Colorado State’s defense, not exempt from their own mistakes, managed to play well enough to bring home the victory. While they were not able to take the ball away as much as they would’ve liked, a clutch sack to finish the game provided all they would need to chalk this one up as a solid performance.
3. Colorado State’s offense compliments itself nicely
Colorado State has enjoyed one of their most successful starts in terms of offense this season, falling within the top ten in total offensive yards. Much of this is due to the one-two punch of Colorado State’s passing and rushing attacks.
Stevens has developed an excellent rapport with one of the nation’s top receivers in Michael Gallup, a partnership that had led to 953 yards coming into this game. With the nation’s best receiver in Gallup constantly churning out solid performances, quarterback Nick Stevens is in good position to establish his offense as one of the best in the nation.
If the Rams’ passing attack wasn’t good enough, a solid run game serves as a perfect complement. With Stevens and Gallup keeping defenses respectful of the pass, Izzy Matthews and Dalyn Dawkins have been provided with some great opportunities on the ground. This was made clear tonight as the two combined for a total of 187 rushing yards.
Not only have the Rams racked up the yardage on opponents, they’ve also been able to capitalize on many of their drives as well. Colorado State currently ranks within the nation’s top 25 in red zone efficiency, scoring in over 90% of their trips to the twenty yard-line. With a 6-2 record on the season, the Rams are now bowl eligible and looking for some seasons to spoil.
