Texas football and Oklahoma State went to overtime in a surprisingly low-scoring game. Here are three takeaways from the close contest in Austin.

Few expected a defensive struggle when Texas hosted Oklahoma State in early Saturday action. The Big 12 showdown was supposed to yield offensive fireworks and keep the scoreboard operators busy all day long. Instead, defense won the day for both sides as the No. 10 Cowboys prevailed 13-10 in overtime.

It was a game that flipped our common perceptions about the Big 12 and about both schools. Texas lost another heartbreaker after close losses to College Football Playoff contenders USC and Oklahoma. A rough first season for new head coach Tom Herman continues to yield growing pains for the Longhorns.

With the narrow victory, Oklahoma State held serve in the Big 12 standings. Mike Gundy‘s team is still in the hunt for a conference title, though the close call will hardly impress pollsters this week. Texas, meanwhile, dropped under .500 in the overall standings and took a serious blow to dreams of returning to a bowl game in 2017.

Everything we thought we knew about the Cowboys and Longhorns needs to be reevaluated after Week 8. What did we ultimately learn about both teams from the overtime game in Austin? Here are three takeaways from the Big 12 battle between Texas and Oklahoma State.
