Texas A&M Football: 2017 midseason grades by position
By Dana Becker
For as great as the Texas A&M ground game was through the first five weeks, they have looked less than ideal since. The Aggies recorded at least 179 yards rushing in their first five games, including a season-high 382 vs. UCLA. In games vs. Florida and Alabama since, they have just 154, averaging two yards per carry.
With a freshman quarterback still learning his way around the offensive system, Texas A&M needs more from Trayveon Williams and Keith Ford. Williams leads with 440 yards and has scored five touchdowns, with Ford leading the team with seven scores and 343 yards. Mond has 318 and Kendall Bussey 221 in limited action.
Best Game
It’d be easy to point at the almost 400-yard showing vs. UCLA and call that the best game this year for the Aggie running back group, but that didn’t result in a win.
Instead, the overtime victory vs. Arkansas earns top honors, as the group ran for 285 yards and averaged 6.8 yards per carry – best this year. Ford ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns, Williams had 72 yards and a score, and Mond cracked 100 yards with 109.
Worst Game
Forty carries for 71 yards. That equates to less than two yards per carry and all that Texas A&M could muster in a 27-19 setback to Alabama.
Had Williams and Ford been able to get on track, maybe the Aggies could have threatened the Crimson Tide with their first loss of the season. Williams was held to 38, Ford to 19 and Mond 14.
