The Biletnikoff Award seems like it is West Virginia football‘s junior receiver David Sills V’s to lose right now with his 15 touchdown catches.
The No. 22 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers nearly gave the Baylor Bears its first win of the 2017 campaign in Week 8. It took a final stand in the final minutes of the game for the Mountaineers to escape Baylor with a win and stay alive in the Big 12 Championship race. However, wide receiver David Sills V definitely gave his best effort against the Bears.
Sills V is putting up video game-type numbers with his 15 touchdown reception, the most in the nation. The next closest player in receiving touchdowns to Sills V is Memphis’s Anthony Miller and SMU’s Courtland Sutton with nine.
He’s also 10th in the country in receiving yards with 737 on 46 catches. Sills V leads the Mountaineers in receiving yards and touchdowns while coming in second on the team in catches. Fellow wide receiver Gary Jennings leads the team with 56.
Considering how much depth and talent there is in the West Virginia receiving corps, it would be easy for Sills V to lose out on opportunities to the other players. However, even with Jennings and Ka’Raun White getting a ton of targets, Sills V is making the most of the chances he does get.
Quarterback Will Grier found instant chemistry with Sills V after coming over from the Florida Gators. Sills V started out in college as a quarterback and has seen his bond with Grier in the passing game pay immediate dividends.

With how good Sills V has looked so far combined with the impressive stat line, he should be the front-runner for the Biletnikoff Award right now (given to the best wide receiver in the country). Oklahoma State’s James Washington is another favorite for the award and it will be interesting to see what happens when West Virginia faces the Cowboys in Week 9.
