4. Sam Ehlinger is the right quarterback for the job

Entering the season, Sam Ehlinger and sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele were battling for the starting role. Yet, coming off a solid freshman campaign, many expected Buechele to get the starting nod for most of the season.

Ehlinger has taken this job over completely over the past few weeks. He’s at least kept the Longhorns close in all the games he’s started. Ehlinger also came in clutch in the 40-34 victory over Kansas State.

Taking care of the football should be the first priority for Ehlinger moving forward. His interception in overtime cost the Longhorns a chance at defeating a top 10 ranked opponent for the first time this season.

Ehlinger started to really establish himself against USC, when Buechele was down with injury. Tom Herman split time between Buechele and Ehlinger from there. Yet, Ehlinger’s eight total touchdowns, more than 1,600 yards, and four picks shows why he’s the obvious choice for starter.
