Sometimes having the best player on the field isn’t enough. One needs no further proof than the current state of the Louisville football program. It’s a down year for Florida State and Clemson suffered a setback against Syracuse. But the Louisville (5-3) failed to take advantage of either because they can’t play defense.

Wake Forest (4-3) has had a similar trajectory, but they weren’t expected to contend for a conference championship. After a 4-0 start the Demon Deacons have lost three straight conference games, but none by a margin greater than 14 points. The Wake defense will give even Lamar Jackson some issues on Saturday.

If Louisville isn’t going to improve at the line of scrimmage or on third down they’ll need to find a way to get their defense off the field. Winning the turnover battle will keep points off the board and get the Cardinals more opportunities to put up points of their own.

Wake Forest needs to do the opposite. They can win if they keep the ball out of Jackson’s hands and limit his opportunities to make game-changing plays. Running the football and long drives should be the goal for the Demon Deacons.

In college football the most talented team doesn’t win every week. That’s a part of what makes this game special. However, it’s hard to believe that the Cardinals are going to fall to 1-4 in ACC play with a Heisman trophy winner under center.
