Memphis football: 3 takeaways in 56-26 win against Tulane
By Jesse Smith
Memphis football continues to be a quiet threat in the American Conference. Here are three thing we learned from the Tigers’ win over Tulane in Week 9.
Memphis entered Friday night’s game still in the hunt for a New Year’s Six Bowl, There are other G5 teams still in the hunt, including a few other teams Memphis’ conference (USF, Navy and UCF). Other non-AAC teams vying for the bid include San Diego State, Boise State and others.
The Tigers took care of business, dismantling Tulane 56-26 to keep their AAC West title hopes alive, and perhaps more.
Here are three takeaways from Memphis’ convincing win.
3. Memphis is still a New Year’s Six Bowl threat
Memphis started the game with 35 unanswered points against an improved Tulane squad. Tulane didn’t lay down. Instead they went on a 19 point run of their own to get the game to 35-19. The Tigers responded by outscoring the Wave 21-7 to end the game.
Memphis was supposed to take care of Tulane and they did, pushing their record to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the AAC. They have a loss to UCF who is ranked No. 18 in the nation and is still undefeated, but in football anything can happen. You just have to see how things play out.
The good thing for Memphis is they are in first place in the AAC West and USF and UCF whom are both undefeated are in the AAC East. USF and UCF are on a collision course at the end of the season to see who will make it the AAC Championship game. If Memphis can win out they could possibly play an undefeated team. Beating them would give the Tigers a strong shot at a New Year’s Six Bowl. Keep winning and the rest will work itself out.
