Michigan football returned to its winning ways on Saturday. The Wolverines used a powerful rushing attack to overwhelm Rutgers in a 35-14 win at the Big House.

Following last Saturday’s 42-13 meltdown at Penn State, Michigan returned to smash-mouth football. Running backs Karan Higdon and Kareem Walker both went over 100-yards on the day. Brandon Peters took over for John O’Korn at quarterback and put up solid numbers, as the Wolverines cruised.

Higdon had a monster game with 158 yards and two touchdowns. The junior surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for his career. Walker also had a nice day with 109 yards on the ground. On the day, Michigan rolled up 471 yards of offense.

The loss ended Rutgers’ brief two-game winning streak. The Scarlet Knights mustered just 195 total yards on the day and found the going tough against a stout Wolverines’ defense. The Rutgers defense found themselves on the field for over 36 minutes. Michigan rolled up 25 first downs on the day, and its rushing attack wore down the smaller Rutgers defense.

With the win, Michigan moves to 6-2 overall, and 3-2 in the Big Ten. Jim Harbaugh‘s crew is hoping for a strong finish to set up a good bowl game. Hopes of a Big Ten East division title were all but dashed a week ago in Happy Valley.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s Rutgers vs. Michigan game.
