The 2018 NFL Draft quarterback class is filled with struggling players like Sam Darnold at the top. Could West Virginia football‘s Will Grier be the answer?
Sophomore West Virginia quarterback Will Grier has largely flown under the radar this season. He’s leading the country in touchdown passes with 26 and has added another two scores on the ground. Grier’s 2,467 passing yards is seventh best in the nation.
The quarterbacks that fans can find at the top of draft boards right now include USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, and Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph. Grier will face Rudolph in Week 9 as the Mountaineers host the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
However, Darnold has not been anywhere close to meeting expectations with the Trojans already sitting at two losses. Darnold has tossed nearly just as many interceptions as touchdowns. Grier has been better in almost every way than Darnold.
This game for West Virginia against Oklahoma State is going to make a huge difference in terms of Grier’s draft stock. Grier gets to face a potential first round pick in Rudolph and has the chance to get the first signature win for the Mountaineers on the season.
In terms of what NFL scouts are looking for, Grier has the arm strength, decision-making, size, and athleticism necessary to succeed on Sunday. He’s tossed only five interceptions in the process of averaging more than five touchdown passes per game.
Not only has Grier been good himself this season, he’s made everyone around him better as well. Wide receiver David Sills V is leading the country in touchdown catches with 15. Grier and Sills V have found instant chemistry. Gary Jennings and Ka’Raun White have gotten a boost also.
