3. Baker Mayfield is still a Heisman contender
It seemed some in the media were backing off quarterback Baker Mayfield’s Heisman contention. This occurred specifically after the Sooner’s loss to Iowa State. In the game against the Cyclones, Mayfield played well and he was not the reason for the loss. Now in hindsight, the loss does not look so bad with Iowa State playing well since their upset win.
Against the Red Raiders Saturday night, Mayfield was superb. While he was actually held to his lowest passing yard total of the season with 281, Mayfield threw four touchdown passes and was pretty accurate on the night. He did throw an interception midway through the third quarter, but the Sooner defense made sure Texas Tech did not capitalize.
With four games left to go plus a possible Big 12 championship game, Mayfield will probably not reach the same stats he had a year ago, where he threw for nearly 4000 yards and 40 touchdowns. However you have to ask yourself where would Oklahoma be without his services? He is far and away the best player on the field for Oklahoma. It is the same reason why Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Stanford’s Bryce Love are in the Heisman discussion. All three players are the most valuable players to their teams, even if they do not have the best statistics. Mayfield should find himself in New York City for the Heisman ceremony for a third year in a row.
