Case for Michigan State

Two losses is a tough sell, but eventually there is going to be a two-loss team among the best four teams in the nation. Why not this year? Entering Week 10 there are just five undefeated teams remaining. One of those is UCF which would need a small miracle to crack the top four. That leaves four: No.1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama, No. 8 Wisconsin and No. 9 Miami.

If there are only four undefeated schools remaining at this juncture of the season then surely there will be more upheaval in the coming weeks. All it takes are a few well placed upsets for the Spartans to suddenly find themselves right in the thick of things once again. And of course, they have to win out.

If they do win out they’ll have wins over Penn State at home and Ohio State on the road plus their road win over Michigan early in the year. The losses to Notre Dame and Northwestern won’t get ignored, but the peaks will outweigh the valleys.

When the committee starts to compare resumes they’re not going to find many teams like Michigan State. The Spartans will have three top 10 wins, two of which came on the road. They’ll also boast a four game winning streak entering a potential trip the Big Ten Championship game. That would give them a shot against another presumably top 10 Wisconsin Badgers.

Alabama has yet to beat one ranked team, let alone four. Michigan State might have some bruises but they’re not throwing in the towel just yet.
