1. Spartans proved they are best team from state of Michigan

Earlier this year, Michigan State knocked off rival Michigan to lay claim to being the best team from the Great Lakes State. They also knocked off defending MAC champion Western Michigan in September, and the hot-and-cold performances of Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan prevented either from laying claim to the state crown.

While Michigan State lost in triple overtime last week against Northwestern, they came into Week 10 still in the hunt for the Big Ten East. Now they control their own fate in the division, with a big test against Ohio State looming next weekend. If the Spartans win out, they will be headed to Indianapolis for an improbable spot in the Big Ten championship game.

Brian Lewerke is evolving into one of the best young quarterbacks in the conference. Against the Nittany Lions, he finished the elongated day with 400 yards and two touchdowns on 33-of-56 passing and added 25 rushing yards.
