Texas Football: Longhorns bowl hopes suffer setback against TCU
Texas football is running out of time for a marquee win. The Longhorns were unsuccessful against TCU in Week 10. What did we learn from their defeat?
Texas 4-5 (3-3 Big 12) entered Saturday’s contest against the TCU Horned Frogs with hopes at pulling off an upset and their biggest win of the 2017 campaign. Instead they were sent home from Fort Worth with their third loss in their last four games.
TCU 8-1 (5-1) kept themselves in the Big 12 Title hunt. A win on Saturday over Texas sets up a massive matchup next weekend against the Oklahoma Sooners, who were victorious in their Bedlam rivalry game over Oklahoma State.
But before we get to next week, here are three things we learned from TCU’s victory over Texas in Week 10.
3. TCU belongs in a New Year’s Six Bowl
The Horned Frogs lost a close game to Iowa State a week ago that knocked them out of the ranks of college football’s undefeated. They have a fighting chance to win the Big 12 next weekend when they travel to No. 5 Oklahoma. No matter what happens in that game, the Frogs have proven they belong somewhere in the ranks of the best teams in the nation.
TCU has no glaring weaknesses. Entering their Week 10 win over Texas the Frogs had the No. 22 scoring offense in the nation and the No. 8 scoring defense in the nation. They might not be “the best” at any one thing, but they do everything well. If Kenny Hill can keep the offense on schedule they’re more than capable threatening everyone they play.
Oklahoma is the Big 12’s front-runner right now. If the Frogs upset them next weekend they’ll be a lock for the Big 12 title game. Even if they don’t this team has proven they’re good enough to be playing in one of this season’s marquee bowl games.
