Then there is Auburn, which is now 7-2 and still does have a shot at the SEC title. The Tigers face two of the last five unbeaten teams in the country before the end of November, and wins over both Georgia and Alabama would upend the SEC’s position in the national picture. Could Gus Malzahn’s team become the first two-loss quad to play for a national title since LSU in 2007?

The College Football Playoff committee seems to think so. In each of the past two weeks, Auburn has been the top-ranked team with two losses in the nation. That trend continued after Week 10, when the Tigers took down Texas A&M on the road in a convincing display of both passing prowess and rushing strength.

Transfer quarterback Jarrett Stidham is finding his touch finally after leaving Baylor for the SEC as a grad student. Meanwhile, Auburn tailback Kerryon Johnson continues to pick up the slack in the backfield. Even before Kamryn Pettway suffered an injury earlier this year, the Tigers runner was outpacing his teammate on the ground.

With the Bulldogs and Crimson Tide in the way, Auburn must play lights-out football. But unlike the other four teams on this list, a team that lost to Clemson and LSU still controls its own fate. If they win out, Auburn will be headed to Atlanta with a shot at winning the SEC. If they do, the Tigers could force the selection committee into the ultimate question about wins, losses, and schedule strength.
