A potential spot in the Big 12 Championship game was on the line when Iowa State football met Oklahoma State in Week 11. Here are three takeaways from the game.
Oklahoma State saw their College Football Playoff hopes take a significant hit in a loss to Oklahoma in Bedlam last week. There is a potential for Mike Gundy‘s squad to earn a rematch, but first they’ll have to qualify for the newly reinstated Big 12 Championship game. That would require a win over Iowa State on Saturday and some help.
Iowa State is coming off a loss against West Virginia in Week 10. The Cyclones fell just short of a fourth quarter rally against the Mountaineers, giving them their third one-score loss in 2017. One of their losses came against Iowa in non-conference play. That keeps them alive in the race for the Big 12 Title as well.
Matt Campbell’s team was not supposed to be here. It’s hard to believe that a team which had lived at the bottom of the Big 12 standings was playing meaningful games at any point of November.
It was another high-scoring affair with plenty of big moments and lead changes. Down by seven points the game came down to a fourth-and-long for Iowa State with 53 seconds remaining. The Cyclones converted on a short pass to running back David Montgomery. They then had a chance to tie the game, but quarterback Zeb Noland‘s pass was ruled intercepted in the endzone, giving Oklahoma State the narrow victory.
