Virginia Tech football traveled to Atlanta on Saturday afternoon to take on Georgia Tech, and here’s what we learned.

Fresh off a loss to Miami on the road, Virginia Tech needed to rebound, but a trip to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech wasn’t going to be much easier. Paul Johnson’s Yellow Jackets entered the game with a 4-4 record, needing to beat the Hokies to feel better about their bowl hopes.

It took Virginia Tech nearly three quarters to show some life offensively, but the game got interesting late. Georgia Tech was able to control it despite completing just one pass — a 60-yard touchdown — through three quarters.

Here’s what we learned from Virginia Tech’s Week 11 loss to Georgia Tech.

3. Virginia Tech wasn’t prepared for the run, which set up the pass

It’s what Georgia Tech does game in and game out. The Yellow Jackets are known for running the ball, averaging 331 yards per game on the ground which is good for third-best in the country. It didn’t seem like the Hokies were prepared for that early on, though.

Sure, the Hokies held the Yellow Jackets under their season average, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that they essentially didn’t have to worry about the pass and were still gashed on the ground.

The one time Georgia Tech did complete a pass in the first three quarters, it was a 60-yard touchdown. The Yellow Jackets then completed another pass in the fourth quarter for 80 yards which ultimately gave them the victory.
