The top team in the country entering Week 11 became the only one of the five remaining undefeated teams to suffer its first loss of 2017. But being chosen as one of the worst losses of the week isn’t merely about the magnitude of the loss. Georgia’s defeat at No. 10 Auburn is among the worst losses of the week because of the nature of the defeat rather than the surface reality that they lost.

Georgia scored a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. It would be the only lead the Bulldogs held all game. By halftime, Auburn was up 16-7 and was on the verge of completely opening things up after the intermission.

In the third quarter, the Tigers blew the lead wide open. On both offense and defense, Kirby Smart’s team had no answer for their hosts. After giving up the opening touchdown, Auburn kept the Bulldogs out of the endzone until the visitors’ final drive of the game. In between, Kerryon Johnson ran for 167 yards and Jarrett Stidham threw three touchdown passes.

The Bulldogs couldn’t even blame their fall on turnovers, as they gave away the football just once on a muffed punt. Instead, Auburn merely clamped down and forced freshman quarterback Jake Fromm to beat them. Fromm failed to complete even half of his passes, and the Tigers more than doubled up the score to deal the top-ranked team in the country one of the worst losses of Week 11.
