S. Derwin James. 2. player. 42. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Florida State

By making the trade for Jimmy Garoppolo, the Niners can now focus on the defensive side of the ball.

Derwin James could become the focal point to a defense that needs to be able to defend the pass playing in the NFC West. Standing 6-3 and weighing over 200 pounds, James hits like a linebacker but has the speed of a cornerback to keep up with some of the best receivers in the ACC.

He had a huge game earlier this year vs. Boston College, making 13 tackles. He also had eight stops vs. both NC State and Louisville, but could not help Florida State from dropping those three games.

San Francisco, who uses a base 4-3 defense, needs more athleticism on the field. James would pair nicely with linebackers Arik Armstead, Reuben Foster and NaVorro Bowman, giving them a fourth heavy-hitter.

James has made 53 total tackles, including 2.5 for loss, with an interception this year. He also has nine passes defended, and has returned four kicks for an average of 29.5 yards per.
