Texas A&M Football: 5 coaches who aren’t the answer for the Aggies
Getting a big name head coach to College Station is a huge goal for Texas A&M football and athletic director Scott Woodward.
The coaching market is very appealing right now with so many upstart programs taking to the spotlight this year. However, there’s some blue blood football programs that also continued to struggle, especially in the SEC, like Texas A&M football. Some big time openings create numerous appealing destinations for all these names on the open coaching market.
Aside from the Texas A&M Aggies, the Tennessee Volunteers and Florida Gators also have some high-profile vacancies, or future vacancies. Tennessee already fired Butch Jones after some embarrassing results this season. Florida had Jim McElwain voluntarily resign, despite a disappointing season nonetheless.
Some other programs that also could have openings by the off-season include the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Arkansas Razorbacks, UCLA Bruins, and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Mike Riley, Bret Bielema, Jim Mora, and Kliff Kingsbury have not been fired yet, but need a solid finish to the year to ultimately save their jobs.
Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin does have one of the better records among all coaches on hot seats, but Aggies are getting tired of the same old result out of their team year in and year out. Sumlin has not exceeded expectations with the Aggies in the last few years and the season opening loss to UCLA did not help his case.
Sumlin’s handling of recent quarterback situations is one of the primary reasons for his downfall. The Aggies saw Kenny Hill go to TCU, Kyler Murray go to Oklahoma, and Kyle Allen go to Houston in the last few years. Texas A&M is now left with two freshmen quarterbacks in Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond.
Here are five coaches that will not be taking over for the Texas A&M Aggies after Kevin Sumlin.
