Kansas football will continue to try and climb out of the Big 12 cellar with David Beaty leading the charge.

Douglas Girod, Chancellor at the school, voiced his support for both Beaty and athletic director Sheahon Zenger recently.

The decision comes as a bit of a surprise in a day and age where going to bowl games and posting winning records will still result in coaches receiving a pink slip at the end of the day.

“A competitive football program benefits the entire university and our academic mission,” Girod wrote. “We need to remain a strong member of the Big 12, and football is key to that.”

Under Beaty, Kansas has gone just 3-31 overall and won just once in 25 Big 12 games. That victory came last year when they upset Texas.

Beaty arrived in Lawrence after a run as the wide receivers coach at Texas A&M. He also previously served as the Kansas offensive coordinator in 2011 and was the wide receivers coach at the school from 2008-09.

Over seven league games this year, the Jayhawks have allowed 319 points.

Beaty was hired as a replacement for Charlie Weis, who also won just a single conference game during his tenure with Kansas. He received a contract extension this past December.

“I want to reiterate my belief in Sheahon and Coach David Beaty,” Girod wrote. “Nobody denies the challenges we are having on the field, but I maintain my belief that Sheahon and Coach Beaty have the right long-term vision and are doing things the right way. Our focus now is empowering them with the tools they need to fulfill their vision.”

Kansas, holding just a single victory over Southeast Missouri State on its resume this year, closes with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. They were also defeated in nonconference games vs. Central Michigan and Ohio before opening Big 12 action by allowing 56 and 65 points in defeats to West Virginia and Texas Tech at home.

The letter from Girod also discusses plans to improve the football facilities, including the use of a $50 million gift from David Booth.
