College Football Upset Alert 2017: UAB putting Florida Gators on alert
By Shane Lunnen
In college football’s Week 12, there are a few teams playing spoiler. Can the favorites avoid being upset?
It is hard to believe there are only two full weeks of the college football regular season left. Seems like it was just August and teams were in fall camp. In Week 12, there is still plenty to be determined, but there are some teams looking to avoid being upset.
Last week’s upset picks did not pan out for the most part. Only Notre Dame being upset in Miami was correct. It was not just an upset, but a old fashioned whopping by the Hurricanes. The Irish’s playoff dreams pretty much died last Saturday.
As for this week, there are not too many enticing games as there have been in recent weeks. Only one match-up is ranked versus ranked. Guess it happens when some teams in certain conferences (looking at you ACC and SEC) decide to schedule weaker opponents before Rivalry Week. Regardless, there are still some teams that should be on the look out this week. The odds are provided by Sportsbook Review.
It has been a trying season in Gainsville. The Gators have not won a game since late September. They will try again this week against UAB. Florida is an 11-point favorite.
Historically, Florida should be heavily favored over UAB, but this is a different Florida team and they are barely a double digit favorite. Florida has struggled to move the ball offensively with any kind of consistency all season. All the major statistical categories favor the Dragons. They have scored more points and totaled more yards than Florida. The Dragon defense has also given up less. Do not let the SEC versus Conference USA fool you. UAB is 7-3 and is looking for a huge win over an historic powerhouse.
UAB head coach Bill Clark has done a fantastic job in the program’s first year back after two years of a self imposed elimination of football. Despite the record discrepancy this season, UAB beating Florida would qualify as a big upset.
