West Virginia football looked to remain alive in the Big 12 title race with a win over Texas Saturday, but how did the Mountaineers fare?

Milan Puskar Stadium has been the site of quite a few ups and downs for West Virginia Football this season. In Week 12, the Mountaineers battled the Texas Longhorns at home in its quest to stay alive in the Big 12 Championship race. However, considering West Virginia still has a matchup with the conference favorite Oklahoma Sooners remaining, things were not looking good.

The Longhorns had a mission of their own to complete by getting bowl eligible in this game. Under first year head coach Tom Herman, Texas was looking to get to only its second bowl game in the last four years. Herman now has the Horns bowl eligible with the sixth win of the 2017 campaign out of the way.

A finger injury to star West Virginia quarterback Will Grier put the Mountaineers in a tough spot by having to throw in Chris Chugunov for only his third appearance of the year. Chugunov did take some time to get comfortable against a solid Texas defense.

In a surprising move, Herman went with sophomore quarterback Shane Buehele for the start. Injuries made the starting patterns for both Buechele and true freshman Sam Ehlinger scattered this year. Yet, Ehlinger got the nod for the bulk of the snaps after only seven passing attempts for 28 yards from Buechele.

The only three teams in the Big 12 that had a real chance at making the Big 12 Championship Game entering Week 12 action were the Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and TCU Horned Frogs. West Virginia is now eliminated from title game contention with the 28-14 loss to the Longhorns.

Here are three takeaways from West Virginia’s Week 12 loss to the Texas Longhorns.
