The Georgia Dome in Atlanta had been host to a lot of great college football games over the years. Here are what we see as the 12 best ever.

In addition to being the home of the NFL Atlanta Falcons, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta was once host to countless college football bowl games and SEC Championship games, as well as Final Fours, college basketball tournaments, Super Bowls, Olympic events, soccer and a lot of concerts.

In fact, the Georgia Dome is the only venue in the world which has ever hosted a Super Bowl, a Final Four and an Olympic event.

On Monday, November 20, 2017 the Georgia Dome was imploded and reduced to a pile of rubble next to the brand new pristine Mercedes-Benz Stadium. While it may seem a premature end to the just 25-year-old structure which first opened its doors in 1992, it’s hard not to reminisce about some of the great college football games ever played under its roof.

1992 Peach Bowl

North Carolina Tar Heels def. Mississippi State Bulldogs, 21-17
Jan. 2, 1993

After spending many years at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the Peach Bowl moved to its new home in the Georgia Dome for the game’s Silver Anniversary. A sellout crowd of 69,125 gathered to see what was the first of many SEC-ACC battles, and set new Peach Bowl and Georgia Dome records.

Mississippi State jumped to an early 14-0 lead, only to see the Tar Heels come back and tie the game just before the first half ended with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. A defensive battle ensused in the second half, and the game appropriately was put away by a 4th quarter interception returned for a score, securing the Tar Heels 21-17 win over the Bulldogs.
