1995 Peach Bowl

Virginia Cavaliers def. Georgia Bulldogs, 34-27
Dec. 30, 1995

The Georgia Bulldogs played in the Peach/Chick-fil-A Bowls five different times, going 3-2 in their New Year’s visits to Atlanta. In 1995, the Bulldogs met the Virginia Cavaliers in what would be one of the most exciting Peach Bowls ever played.

More from Saturday Blitz

The Cavs got out to an early 24-6 lead, and looked to be in control of the game, but Hines Ward (who posted 496 total yards of offense in the game) and the Bulldogs came storming back.

Early in the fourth quarter, Georgia kicker Kanon Parkman nailed a 42-yard field goal which cut the Virginia lead to just seven points. With 1:09 remaining, Georgia’s Jason Ferguson picked up a Virginia fumble and rumbled 10 yards for a touchdown to tie the game. But a costly celebration penalty forced Georgia to kickoff from the 20-yard line, giving Virginia just the opportunity they needed.

With a Peach Bowl record crowd of 70,284 going nuts and hoping for overtime (mostly in red and black), the ensuing kickoff was run back by Virginia’s Demetrius Allen for record-setting and game-winning 83-yard touchdown resulting in a 34-27 Cavaliers win.

The most telling stat of the game was Georgia losing despite a total offense edge of 525 to 256 yards.
