1998 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

Georgia Bulldogs def. Virginia Cavaliers, 35-33
Dec. 31, 1998

After the crushing last minute defeat against Virginia in the 1995 Peach Bowl, coach Jim Donnan and his No. 19 Georgia Bulldogs had the chance to avenge that loss just three years later.

It was No. 12 Virginia striking first, building a 21-point lead over the Bulldogs. Georgia then responded with 21 points of their own as the game moved through the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, it was Georgia who took the lead for good when senior running back Olandis Gary finished off a 67-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. UGA Quarterback Quincy Carter scored again on a one-yard sneak, and Georgia’s lead was upped to eight points.

But just as in 1995, Virginia wasn’t done, responding with a touchdown with only 1:34 remaining. The UVA two-point conversion failed, which seemed to seal a victory for Georgia.

But it was Virginia recovering an onside kick, which set up a 48-yard field goal attempt with 19 seconds remaining. The kick was pushed wide right and Georgia escaped with a 35-33 victory.
