Overcoming the odds, Ole Miss football pulled out victory in the 114th edition of the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving night. Here are three things we learned.

After #MACtion kicked off Week 13 on Tuesday, the action heated up in earnest with a Thanksgiving night showdown between rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The annual Egg Bowl took place amidst the cowbells at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville this year, and it was an affair to remember.

Played annually since 1901, the battle for the Golden Egg is the 10th oldest continuous rivalry game in the country. This year, the 114th edition of the rivalry offered yet another classic result. Ole Miss came into the game as a two-touchdown underdog, but rivalry games rarely play out to oddsmaker-approved form.

Horrific injuries, record-breaking performances, and defensive spectacles marked the festivities between the Rebels and the Bulldogs. Jordan Wilkins capped his college career with 110 yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels, going over 1000 yards for the season. Mississippi State scored two late touchdowns, but in the end Ole Miss held on for a 31-28 upset over its state rival.

In the process, Mississippi State fell out of the running for a New Year’s Six bowl invitation while the Rebels concluded a disappointing season on a high note. What did we learn from this year’s edition of one of the great southern rivalries? Keep reading for three takeaways from the road win by the Rebels over the rival Bulldogs.
