Ole Miss football ended 2017 with a big win over rival Mississippi State, but where did that victory rank among the best Egg Bowls of all time?

For Ole Miss football, rounding out the 2017 regular season with a win over in state rival Mississippi State Bulldogs was a huge way to cap things off. It was also another boost to interim head coach Matt Luke to help him get a leg up in the coaching race in Oxford.

The 14th ranked Bulldogs, under head coach Dan Mullen, had other ideas with the game at home in Starkville at Davis-Wade Stadium. The Egg Bowl was supposed to be one of the most hotly contested football games of Thanksgiving Day, including all NFL action instead it took an unexpected turn with the injury of Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.

Last year, Mississippi State defeated a Rebels squad that was struggling by the end of 2016, with a 55-20 romping at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Mississippi State was a two touchdown favorite this year as well but it was Ole Miss that snuck away with a three point victory.

More than anything, this was the biggest game of the year in the state of Mississippi. It’s one of those games that will divide the state, no matter how good each team is. After the Rebels’ victory this year Ole Miss still maintains the edge in this rivalry with a 64-44-9 record. Yet, Mississippi State does own a slight edge recently with five wins in the last nine Egg Bowls.

It was compelling, but it likely ranks outside of the the final list. Here are the five best Egg Bowls of all time.
