This game was one of the instant classics of this rivalry. It was played at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, MS. That was the home of the Bulldogs until 1990. Now, it is home to the Jackson State Tigers.

Mississippi State entered this game with a freshman quarterback in John Bond that had a tremendous season. Bond helped the Bulldogs cap a nine win season with a big win over the biggest rival. He racked up 163 rushing yards himself.

Steve Sloan was the head coach for Ole Miss in this one while Emory Bellard was the head coach for Mississippi State. Sloan helped the Rebels win the five previous Egg Bowls before losing this one and departing the program three years later.

This was truly a season to remember for the Bulldogs, since they won nine games. Four of those nine wins came against the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, Auburn Tigers, and Ole Miss. Any time Mississippi State can do that, it’s a special time in Starkville.
