Arkansas Football: Waiting for Gus Malzhan is worth the risk
Arkansas football is in the market for a new head coach. Although it’s a long shot, waiting for Gus Malzahn is worth the risk.
The Razorbacks fired former head coach Bret Bielema as quickly as they could following a season ending loss to Missouri. It was definitely time to move on, but the Razorbacks now find themselves in a state of limbo. They have no athletic director and they have no head coach. Current Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is the Razorbacks’ top choice, but the odds of luring him away from a potential College Football Playoff team are microscopic.
Whether the odds of Malzahn returning to his home state are two percent or one in a million the Razorbacks need to try. Malzahn played at Arkansas and later served as the Razorbacks’ offensive coordinator. He’s already been the head coach at Arkansas State, but the allure or Arkansas will at least warrant a conversation. The Razorbacks need to wait for that conversation.
Potential coaching candidates continue to come off the board. Ole Miss and Mississippi State have both filled their vanacies at the position leaving Araknsas and Texas A&M as the only open jobs in the SEC West. The Aggies seem to be on their way to stealing Jimbo Fisher away from Florida State, leaving Arkansas as the last puppy to the bowl. That was always going to be the case, and if the Razorbacks are going to get the last pick they might as well swing for the fences.

You never know if you don’t ask. Malzahn is the prettiest girl in school and Arkansas isn’t the most attractive suitor. But there’s always that chance, and as long as there’s a chance it’s worth risking it and striking out. They’ve got nothing to lose.
