Oklahoma State football does not have to find a new football coach. Current head coach Mike Gundy has chosen to stay in Stillwater. Why did he do it?

Mike Gundy had been rumored to be a strong candidate for the Tennessee job. The reported offer was six years/$42 million dollars. But he declined and will stay the Head Coach of his alma mater Oklahoma State.

After Greg Schiano and Tennessee “fell through”,  the Vols almost snagged a diamond in the rough with Mike Gundy. But Gundy declined the pay raise in Knoxville to stay home in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Here are three reasons why Mike Gundy didn’t take the Tennessee head coaching job.

1. He is Oklahoma State

Mike Gundy has lived most of his 50 years of life in Oklahoma. From childhood to playing his college ball as the quarterback for the Cowboys and coaching the team, he has only lived four years outside of the state of Oklahoma.

As a prep star in the state, he was voted the best football player in state in 1986. Then he went on to play his ball in Stillwater. The young Gundy would then become one of the best quarterback in the school’s history. He is No. 2 in the team’s history with 57 touchdown passes.

The player ahead of him? His current quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Gundy also played with the Cowboys best player ever Barry Sanders. So, that’s always cool.

Since 1986,  he has always been a part of the Cowboy football besides stints with Baylor and Maryland from 1996-2000. He is Oklahoma State football and the fans at Stillwater who be sad to see their homegrown mullet leave again.
