Kevin Sumlin did not do a good job developing quarterbacks in his time with Texas A&M football, but Jimbo Fisher would be different.
Texas A&M football cannot stay out of the headlines right now with all the news following the firing of head coach Kevin Sumlin. Current Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher also cannot stay out of the news with all the back and forth in regards to him staying in Tallahassee.
Most of the focus for this situation fell on the prospect of Fisher leaving the Noles, and how that would effect FSU’s recruiting. However, it does look like Fisher is on the way out after multiple commits opened up their recruiting again.
In Fisher’s time with FSU, he was great at developing some high profile quarterbacks and that’s something he’ll be able to do with the Aggies. The Texas A&M quarterback situation was not the brightest under Sumlin, and he swapped between two freshmen this year.
Redshirt freshman Nick Starkel got the nod to finish the year, and was also the season opening starter. An ankle injury against the UCLA Bruins knocked Starkel out for a good portion of the year. True freshman Kellen Mond took over after that.
Mond showed promise for the first few weeks, and then started to regress. Once Starkel came back from the ankle injury, he was the starter down the stretch. Starkel finished the season with 1,294 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, with five interceptions.
Meanwhile, Mond tossed eight touchdowns and six interceptions, but he also racked up three rushing touchdowns. He started to tail off after the loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs ultimately cost him the starting job.

Fisher has quite the resume of developing quarterbacks in Tallahassee. The most famous of those is Jameis Winston, who led the Noles to a National Championship in 2013. Others include Christian Ponder, E.J. Manuel, and Deondre Francois. He would have a positive effect on Starkel’s career from here on out to finally bring some stability to Texas A&M’s quarterback situation.
