UCLA Football: 3 signs that the Chip Kelly era will be great
3. Modster and Thompson-Robinson are both promising options
Kelly’s most successful quarterbacks at Oregon could run the spread option to perfection. However, his best quarterback, former Heisman Trophy winner and Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, was a true dual threat.
While Modster is a pro-style quarterback and Thompson-Robinson is a dual threat, both have the ability to be effective with their legs and arm. Modster performed well in limited action this year, with 185 passing yards and two touchdowns and no picks.
Moreover, Modster did lead the Bruins to a big win over the Cal Golden Bears to get them bowl eligible. That win over Cal was in Modster’s first career start as well. The Pac-12 action he was was no joke. He faced the Washington Huskies, Utah Utes, and the Golden Bears.
However, Thompson-Robinson brings a new dynamic to this offense, with more of a polarizing style than that of Modster. If anything’s true, it’s that Kelly should be able to get the best out of both quarterbacks and give them both a chance.
