Florida State Football: 5 best coaching candidates to replace Jimbo Fisher
3. Kevin Sumlin, Free Agent (Texas A&M)
Kevin Sumlin has been a name floated around for the Florida State job since the first rumors that Jimbo Fisher would look elsewhere for 2018. Sumlin was recently fired as the Aggies head football coach after having one of their most successful coaching tenures in Texas A&M history.
The expectations in College Station are much higher than the realities have been on the field. The 12th Man hasn’t won a national title since 1939, and they haven’t won a conference title since R.C. Slocum was the head coach in 1998. What’s changed since 1998 around college football? Just about everything imaginable including the conference the Aggies play in, and the addition of the College Football Playoff model of choosing a national champion.
Sumlin has an 86-43 overall head coaching record and coached a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback in Johnny Manziel. Those seem to be beloved qualities to the Seminoles since they have had Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher who have both done the same. Sumlim though doesn’t have Florida recruiting ties and hasn’t coached west of the Mason-Dixon line.
He’s also been rumored to have discipline issues amongst his players and the fiasco that was Manziel sits right up there with Fisher’s fiasco that was Jameis Winston. Sumlin is a free agent, just got a healthy buyout, and this doesn’t require a lot of maneuvering to come in right away to be the Seminoles coach.
